Late-night taxi safety
Sensible, low-effort habits that make late-night rides home from Haywards Heath, Brighton or Crawley feel that much safer.
Golden rule: only get into the car if the vehicle, driver and booking details all match what your booking confirmation says. If anything is off, walk away.
Before you get in
- Check the vehicle reg matches the SMS / app confirmation.
- Check the driver’s name matches — ask them, don’t lead with the name (“Hi, who are you picking up?” not “Are you Dave?”).
- Check the driver’s photo in the booking confirmation matches the person.
- Look for a council licence disc on the rear window or dashboard. Mid Sussex District Council discs are standard on licensed local cars.
- If anything doesn’t match, don’t get in. Cancel via the app or text the dispatcher.
Share your trip
Send a friend or family member your tracking link before you set off. The SMS confirmation we send includes a shareable live map — just forward the message. They can watch the car move in real time and will see when you arrive.
In the car
- Sit in the back if you’re alone, on the rear left seat — it puts you furthest from the driver and gives the best view of the route.
- Keep your phone charged. Top up before you leave the venue, or carry a small power bank for nights out.
- Watch the route. If it deviates significantly from the map and you’re uneasy, ask why politely. Drivers usually have a good reason (one-way road, accident, roadworks). If the answer doesn’t feel right, ask to stop somewhere busy and well-lit.
- Trust your instincts. You don’t need a reason to ask to be dropped at the nearest pub, petrol station or any busy public place.
Group nights out
- Book the cab home before the night starts, especially for groups of 5+ — last-minute 6-seaters at 2am can be scarce.
- Agree a pickup point and time with the group before you split up.
- The smallest / most sober person gets the front seat and acts as the lead contact with the driver.
- Don’t over-promise on drop-offs. If you’re splitting the fare across several houses, agree the order before getting in.
Coming home from Brighton
Late-night Brighton to Haywards Heath is one of our most-booked routes on Friday and Saturday nights. A few tips:
- Book in advance — pickup demand on West Street and the seafront after 1am is intense.
- Agree the pickup point with the driver: Black Lion Street and Old Steine are good loading spots; West Street itself is often blocked.
- Expect the upfront fare to reflect distance + journey time. Brighton → Haywards Heath is typically £38–£52 — anyone trying to charge £80+ at the kerbside is not a pre-booked driver of ours.
- Don’t jump into an unmarked car that pulls up offering a lift. Always confirm the driver against your booking.
If something goes wrong
- Immediate danger: call 999.
- Lost property: reply to your booking confirmation SMS — we can contact the driver while the car is still nearby.
- Complaint about a driver: email safety@xtaxi24.com with the date, time and ride ID (in your booking SMS). We treat every report seriously and we cooperate fully with Mid Sussex District Council’s licensing team.
- Felt unsafe but couldn’t pinpoint why: tell us anyway. We log every report and patterns help.
Why pre-booked is safer than flagging down
- The booking is on a record — driver, vehicle, time, route, payment.
- You can share the journey with a friend in real time.
- The driver knows there’s an audit trail. So do we.
- Disputes can be investigated using GPS data, not just memory.
